Purchased two of these when they first came out and had them inscribed with my military “call-sign” of Nightstalker in Script. Both knives were well done and even though I typically purchase Opinel knives (my first was a hand me down from my grandmother who died in 1932 and I have had for 74 years) with carbon blades, the stainless steel on these is very well done, easily sharpened and holds it’s edge. It has become my everyday pocket knife. Thank you for creating a beautiful knife that always gets compliments. I highly recommend both this knife and your inscription service. I have had several inscribed and the job is always well done.
Nice knife but slightly disappointing on a few counts. Firstly the knife blade I received was not sharpened all the way up to the tip forcing me to sharpen it the day that I received it. Quite annoying and not what I expected from a knife advertised as "sharp out of the box". The blade is described as "polished" on the web page .. I would say that this is not true. The blade I received had more of a satin finish (stainless appliance type) than a true polish. Maybe it was the polishers day off? The blade open and close movement on mine is incredibly stiff. I hope that this will loosen up over time but I do agree that it's better than being too loose. So overall, I expected a premium version .. and what I got seemed more like the cheaper versions.
Hi Robert, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us and the Opinel community! I'm sorry to hear that there have been a few hiccups. Regarding the sharpening finish, this is still done by hand, by human beings at the factory and it can (rarely) happen that the final result isn't perfect. I do apologize that you had to finish the tip yourself. The blade folding mechanism can be too tight or too loose, depending on the wood swelling/drying. Sometimes during transit as the knife travel from one environment to another, it can cause that stiffness. I've you've never heard of the "Savoyard Knock", I invite you to check our tips & tricks page because that will help you get the blade out more easily! You can also always add a drop of lubricant inside the hinge, and run the blade back and forth a few times and that should do it. Last but not least, we would actually be curious to see a photo of your blade because this is the first time we hear such a comment on the mirror-finished blade. So we would want to make sure yours is the way it's supposed to be! Feel free to send us an email with photos at: retail@opinel-usa.com Thank you again Robert!
I bought this because it was just impossibly elegant. It is not only that but also because of the heavier ebony, has the best feel in the hand of any of the three premium woods I’ve acquired. A true 5 star!

Hand polished Sandvik 12C27 modified stainless steel to create a beautiful mirror effect. It is anti-corrosive thanks to the addition of chrome and requires no special maintenance. Its carbon content of at least 0.40% provides an excellent cutting edge and is easily sharpened.
